Why I love the Library Contest: I was the new guy in town and she was just down the street. Kids told me to stay away from her but I couldn't. She was older, brilliant and drop dead gorgeous. Sometimes I would look out the window from 5th period history class and see her standing there. I'd smile. She gave me things, lot's of things. But for whatever reason, she always wanted them back. My parents were worried that we spent too much time together, that she was filling my head with 'all that fiction.' But she knew so much about the world - history, sports, geography, and current events. She was smarter then anyone I knew and I loved her. I thought for sure I was her favorite but when I found out she was giving other kids stuff too, cd's and movies. I was hurt, really hurt. Much later, when I had kids of my own, I introduced her to them. I wasn't sure what they'd think but they grew to love her and it was clear she loved them too. Sometimes they stayed with her when I had something important to do. She told them stories and gave them books, so many books. Strangely again, she always wanted them back. I'm older now, my kids are grown, my hair is turning grey. She looks the same. She gets up later. On Monday's, she's never around until two and she won't see me after 8. I don't ask her where she goes. It's not my business. We spend a lot of time together. Sometimes I sit and read for hours with her. Sometimes I just have a cup of coffee and look at a magazine. Other times if she's busy, I'll borrow a movie, (she has lots of movies). I'm always welcome and she's very generous. We are both having a good life and have shared a lot. We have something very special. She still gives me books, lots of books. And as it's been, for as long as I care to remember, she always wants them back. Craig Bloodgood February 9, 2010
